Hi everybody,
I would like to know if java stack is required/mandatory/or must be installed when you're upgrading a solman from 3.2 to 7.0 sp13.
I'm in charge of a update's project of solution manager, and the java stack wasn't install when the team upgrade it.
I know that normally, after read this a lot of time, installation of 7.0 is dual stack. Only one scenario can provide an abap only, that is the upgrade that i told you at the beginning.
So the last but not the least, i was wondering if there is not a document which provides an information about the obligation of the java stack, even if it's from an upgrade.('cause the system is not stable etc...)
Hope you will help me.
Thanks.
Florent

In the "early days" (of Solution Manager 4.0) it was necessary to install a 6.40 Addin into the 6.20 based Solution Manager 3.2, upgrade that Java Addin to the patchlevel required for the upgrade and then do a combined ABAP and Java upgrade at the same time (run SAPup and SAPJup).
Nowadays this has changed. The procedure is listed in
http://service.sap.com/instguides
--> SAP Components
--> SAP Solution Manager
--> Release 7.0

It's also HIGHLY recommended to migrate to Unicode (before or after the ugprade).

If you are an "Enterprise support" customer - yes. Usually, as per your SAP contract, you have to install and maintain the Java part - but I'd double check that.
For the normal maintenance (patching) no Java in the SolMan is needed.

For me, it just says that we can install or not the java stack and in the upgrade guide there is not the obligation to install it...
The paragraph 6.6 in the upgrade guide just says that after upgraded successfully the central instance we can install java components.
I never find explicitily that java stack is mandatory in the 7.0 or the 7.1. (i found it for the installation of 7.0 but not the upgrade...)

Solution Manager is by definition ABAP + Java. If you install it, you don't have a choice.

Yes - Solution Manager Diagnostics which is necessary to get e. g. EWAs for Java systems.

Combined ABAP + Java stacks are necessary for PI 7.1 (and XI 3.0) and Solution Manager.
You don't need to install the Java part if you don't have Java instances in your landscape and you don't plan to do any E2E or RCA scenarios for them. You also need to be aware that an EWA creation for Java systems is also not possible.

Ok but are we obliged to install the java stack? and where is it mentionned?

Yes i read that many times before asking my question....but does it mean that 7.0 must be on dual stack, even if the upgrade scenario...???
In the upgrade FAQ guide, i already found this....but it never tolds me that it is required/mandatory...
5 Install Add-In Diagnostics (Java)
Refer to SAP Service Marketplace:
service.sap.com/instguides-> SAP NetWeaver -> Release 2004s ->Installation -> 2-Installation-SAP NetWeaver 2004s ->
Installation Documentation-SAP NetWeaver 2004s SR2. Under the required platform select Java.
It only talks about scenarios but i would like to know generally...not in some cases.

You will upgrade your system to 7.0 and then "add" the Java instance using a normal netweaver Java Addin installation.

What do you mean with "generally"? In the SolMan case that's the way to go.
