The enhancement framework concent (the link to help already provided) is quite powerful. You should be able to use it to add your new field. However if the component is used in multiple applications, that gets a little trickier. You might actually have to use the Enhancement Framework to add your component and then create appliation/component configuration in some of the other applications to hide the new field when you don't want it. This should all be possible without modifying SAP.
