Thanks a lot!

Hi,

Please read the detail about SAP backup via IBM Tivoli then after you will clear understand what is your actual requirement and what parameters you need to match. mean what OS, database and SAP version you are using.

Can we use Tivoli to backup MaxDB, UDB and SQLserver?

You will all ans in the documenation, if I will say yes then various question arises e.g what is version of DB and what vesion supports of Tivoli.

The following link is Managing SAP R/3 with Tivoli.

In short

if you are using TDP..

1. Install TDP client in your server which will connect to TSM server. ( this will be done by TSM team)

2. Configure initSID.utl file ( ORACLE_HOME/database)--this will contain the information about your TSM server, buffer information etc...

3. Change in your initSID.utl file , backup device would be util_file...and some other parameters are there which are quite self-explanatory.

you can also check the below links if you face any problem

Hello Christy,

> However I am specially looking for Tivoli backup utility which is not covered in the links provided.

So as i understand you .. you haven't decided until yet which Tivoli backup utility you want to use?

So at first i want to say that it is possible to backup nearly every database with Tivoli products.

-> http://www-01.ibm.com/software/tivoli/products/storage-mgr-db/

-> http://www-05.ibm.com/de/entwicklung/adint_tsm/

Now in a SAP environment you have the choice (like i already mentioned above).

Tivoli Data Protection for mySAP (TDP for mySAP/ERP)

- Integration into BRTools (thats what Anindya already wrote). So you can perform any backup/restore/recover actions through the BRTools.

- Much more expensive than the database specific Tivoli solutions

- Perform different kinds of backup (data file copy to TSM / Oracle RMAN to TSM).

Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle (TDPO)

- Specific Tivoli product for the oracle database which is used in combination with Oracle RMAN (Media Management Library)

- No support by SAP, because of you are using RMAN without the BR*Tools .. you need support by Oracle

- More flexible with Oracle RMAN functions

- Much more cheaper than TDP for mySAP

Btw. right now i am migrating from "TDP for mySAP" to "TDP for Oracle" .. and it works fine. Until now we have different kind of backups for Oracle databases (SAP / non-SAP databases) and i am consolidating the SAP oracle databases into our RMAN infrastructure. We also have support by Oracle so in our case it is no problem

Regards

Stefan

Hello Christy,

one important information is missing.

Which software do you want to use from Tivoli?

- Tivoli Data Protection for mySAP (TDP for mySAP/ERP)

- Tivoli Data Protection for Oracle (TDPO)
