We intend to conduct Periodic lab testing as per a defined schedule. In order to do so we tried to use the same functionality of PM module through which calibrations of instruments are scheduled. We created a maintenance plan and attached a Material No. in the Object list instead of attaching an Equipment No. But this method is not resulting in creation of inspection lot. Is it the right method to meet the objective or does an alternate way exist to handle the scenario.
NO. You cannot assign Material to Maitenance Plan and try to map periodic testing as Calibration Process. Calibration is meant only for Equipment Masters.
Instead you can schedule a manual inspection lot at regular interval of time for the material. Also create workcenter as your lab and assign in inspection plan so that you can have reports based on workcenters. (Labs)

What exactly do you mean when you say "schedule a manual inspection lot". Does such scheduling create inspection lots at regular intervals of time. In fact we want to have the inspection lots automatically created at let us say a frequency of once every three months for around 100 part nos. and each part no. may have a different start date. Creating inspection lots manually with inspection origin 89 is a known option but then it is not a foolproof way of ensuring that the due inspection get conducted. Could you please suggest how such a scheduling can be done, thereby eliminating the need of manual lot creation.

Through SHDB you record the Transaction QA01 for a Material and ask your ABAPer to wrtie a program so that is runs at specified interval of time for those parts which you would like to create Manual Inspection Lots.

In the maintenance plan (Transaction code IP41 / IP02), there is a provision in the object list to capture material nos. There is also an option of Assembly (just under the field of Equipment) in Maintenance Plan. What exactly is the relevance (pupose) of these fields in maintenance plan and what would be the implications if maintenance plan is created without reference to any equipment but with a material no. enetered in any one of these fields.
Dear Sudhir
Can stability study be used for this purpose . This is based on material and scheuling as per the PM module. Please check and let me know

Hi
If you want to interface between the PM & QM then these Masters must be Equipement & not Material Master.
Then your cycle will work.
But the best way would be for conduct Periodic lab testing you can always create a 07 (audit type ) inspection lot through QA01.Also create a notification in background in case of any non coformity found for the same. This will help you to keep track of lots & noncoformity found if any.
You can shedule the lots as per your convinience.
This is just a suggestion
