Hi Jimmy,

MDM, in the current industry, is used for data consolidation, enrichment, content management, and distribution. In that sense there are some similarities and some fundamental differences between MDM and BW.

MDM comes with standard product, vendor, customer, employee, etc. repositories out of the box with ability to integrate with SAP using XI. MDM also allows you to create custom repositories. The custom repository can use taxonomy, and hierarchies dependending on the nature of your business data.

Based on your statement that it is going to replace a legacy system, MDM seems to be the right choice whether it is automated data flow and/or user managed data (via UI).

BW on the other hand is used often to support decision support reporting (certainly not limited to that).

Lastly, it helps and makes it easy to learn MDM as MDM rather than in comparison with BW. The service market place has a wealth of information on typical business scenarios, software set up, etc. The forums and blogs have information on how to start and come up the learning curve with MDM quickly. Please refer to any questions that have "MDM new/start up" in the subject line. Or refer to answers from Markus, Subbu, Ravi or Rajani where they give links to blogs.

Good luck and Thanks

Yes.

MDM has a powerful Taxonomy structure.

You can create a catalog with a hierarchy structure.

Example:

Office Products -> Printers -> Color Printers

Office Products -> Printers -> B&W Printers

You can then assign the product records to the respective categories.

MDM will then syndicate data to BW.

Strategy wise, all Master data will be managed in MDM for the entire company.

BW is one of the user applications of MDM. In BW, you can then do ETL operations based on this categorization, as given by MDM.

Hope this helps.
