compressing of online backup

Hello masters,

our total production DataBase size is 220 GB but when i am taking OS backup , it requires 2 tapes. now i don't understand why this happens evenif tape size is 700 GB? system details are follows; also please inform me how to activate compress and deactivate?

SAP ECC 6.0, Oracle 10.2.0.1.0 , HP-UX 11i. I am taking backup using windows X-manager

Just as Info:

Oracle 10.2.0.1 is not supported (it never was). That version has serious bugs.

I urge you to upgrade to at least 10.2.0.2 plus all relevant interim patches.

Have a look at your init<SID.sap file.

How is tape_size configured? Perhaps much less than your 700GB?

You may also set parameter compress there. Check with your hardware vendor, if the drives support hardware compression.

tape_size = 700G

  1. volume size in KB = K, MB = M or GB = G used by brarchive

  2. default: value of the tape_size parameter

  3. tape_size_arch = 100G

the above parameter is set in init.sap profile...and the compress is not set

Hi,

I hope that you are taking backup using BRTools. In that case you need to modify the parameter "tape_size" in the sap profile (/orcle/sap/<sid>/dbs/init<SID>.sap) to a higher value than your database size.
