Load on Server too high

Former Member

Hi ,

In our one of server, system usage is too high around 83%, while idle % is around 7% only.Although there is only 1 user is working at this time i.e me only.

I have checked in ST06.Detail analysis menu>Top CPU process..

Top processes with their utilization are, online backup is also going on:

kntcma.exe 20.27

bpbkar32.exe 18.97

disp+work.EXE 10.22

disp+work.EXE 2.04

mcshield.exe 2.05

disp+work.EXE 1.93

disp+work.EXE 1.81

disp+work.EXE 1.81

disp+work.EXE 1.70

disp+work.EXE 1.70

disp+work.EXE 1.70

disp+work.EXE 1.70

disp+work.EXE 1.59

disp+work.EXE 1.59

disp+work.EXE 1.47

disp+work.EXE 1.47

disp+work.EXE 1.47

disp+work.EXE 1.47

disp+work.EXE 1.47

disp+work.EXE 1.36

disp+work.EXE 1.36

disp+work.EXE 1.36

disp+work.EXE 1.25

disp+work.EXE 1.02

In SM50 i have checked their 2 processes one is backgroung & other is update that are used by SAPSYS user & are getting restarted autometically.

Please suggest urgently.

Thanks

Yes, it seems that backup is running..

From Sm37 check if any DBA* jobs is running and check its execution server.

Where is your database located?

Do you take VERITAS net backup?

kntcma seems to be from IBM Tivoli, the second one seems to be a virus scanner. Apparently a backup is running and the machine is busy with checking the database files read by the backup tool.

Hi,

Second one is that of backup.Main Problem which i am thinking is the utlization by Disp+work, as two work processes, one is backgroung process & other one update process are getting restarted after sometime again & again, thus raising the utlization of system.

No. Ty PID STatus Start Err Sem Time User

22 UP2 6980 running Yes 68 1 308 SAPSYS

If you check the windows task manager and switch on kernel times you'll see that most of the time is spent in the kernel due to the fact, that a virus scanner hooks up to the I/O layer. You should configure your virus scanner so that it doesn't scan the database files (or put a firewall in front of the system and uninstall the scanner).

Where do you see that the workprocesses are restarted?

please provide the work process trace from SM50 for those which are getting restarted.

Are you getting any memory related dump ?

Former Member

Hi,

I amgetting following error message in SM21 log;

B0 Run-time error "PXA_NO_SHARED_MEMORY" occurred

> Include ??? line 0000.

Run-time error "SYSTEM_NO_ROLL" occurred

While no ABAP dump is coming.

I restarted the application. Now some other two processes are occupied by SAPSYS & getting restarted time & again thus aloso incresing the system utilization.

Please suggest.

Yesterday moring i was facing error Spool is full thus by referring SAP Note 48284 i have increased the spool request limit, now that problem is not coming although but is it related to present problem somewhere?

Thanks

You have increased abap/buffersize recently? If yes, revert it back. Did you have a look at 88416 as suggested earlier?

Check OSS https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/307976 for PXA_NO_SHARED_MEMORY.

All you work process will die if system can not provide memory = abap/buffersize.

SYSTEM_NO_ROLL is related to your ROLL memory settings. What is your RAM size?

Also let us know the values of the parameters below

em/initial_size_MB

em/max_size_MB

em/address_space_MB

ztta/roll_first

ztta/roll_area

ztta/roll_extension

abap/heap_area_dia

abap/heap_area_nondia

abap/heap_area_total

rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS

rdisp/ROLL_SHM

rdisp/PG_MAXFS

rdisp/PG_SHM

PHYS_MEMSIZE

Last but not the least....What is your page file size ( windows virtual memory)?

Minimum 1.5 X RAM should be there. The basis for Zero Administration memory management is sufficiently large page file

Please do check 88416

Hi,

We havn't change the buffer area. recently.yaesterday i have increased the spool requests numbe range only with transaction snro according to the sap note number 43484.

Our Ram size is 4Gb.

Paging File Space ( My Computer>>Properties>Advanced>Performance Options) 4gb.

Other Paramters are:

em/initial_size_MB 2048

em/max_size_MB 20000

em/address_space_MB 256

ztta/roll_first 1

ztta/roll_area 2000000

ztta/roll_extension 2000000000

abap/heap_area_dia 2000000000

abap/heap_area_nondia 2000000000

Param. Name

abap/heap_area_total 2000000000

rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS 32768

rdisp/ROLL_SHM 32768

rdisp/PG_MAXFS 32768

rdisp/PG_SHM 16000

PHYS_MEMSIZE 2048

abap/buffersize 500000

I have read the link 7 note refered y you, but those are related to Abap dump PXA*,but we are getting no abap dump only error message in sm21.

Apart from these two processes are getting restarted automatically time & again also raising the CPU utilization by 100%.

Earlier our server has two processors but now one got failed, server team is working on that.Is the faulty processor may also be the reason for this?

Thanks

I don't think that the restarting WPs are the the reason for the 100 % load. I'd more dig into the virus scanner and backup thing since those processes consume most of the CPU on your system (according to what you posted).

Markus

Hi,

Now backup is not running, apart from these process kntcma.exe that was consuming cpu has been stopped since that was tivoli agent service.

No user is login into the system, even then cpu utilization is 100%.

As you can see your SYSTEM time is very high. That means, that a process in the KERNEL of the operating system is consuming a huge amount of time.

> 6,500 SAPServiceV disp+work.EXE 19.31 0:1

> 1,320 SYSTEM mcshield.exe 4.72 0:0

You also seem to have McAfee installed on the system?

A virus scanner on a database server is a VERY bad idea. For a first try I would just stop the service and see if the load decreases. Then I would exclude all the database files and the SAP files from being scanned.

It seems that your system is, despite nobody's logged on - pretty active. What do you see in SM66?

Hi,

Just few minutes back the processes that were restarted automatically & that are occupied by SAPSYs got stopped, at that moment Cpu utilization comes down from 100% to 1%.

Now those processes gets started again in SM50 & again load in St06 incrreases to 100%.

Please suggest

Thanks

So all those procesess are occupied by SAPSYS??

Stop the virus scanner and see if the problem persists. If it does we need to look deeper into the trace files.

You can try with half of the current values for the following params.

rdisp/ROLL_MAXFS 32768

rdisp/ROLL_SHM 32768

rdisp/PG_MAXFS 32768

rdisp/PG_SHM 16000

Do you have database running in the same server? If NO, then assign the full RAM size to PHYS_MEMSIZE.

If database is on the same server, then divide the RAM in 60:40 Ratio. That is your PHYS_MEMSIZE= 0.6 X RAM SIZE

Increase your Page File size to 8 GB.

Restart your server(not necessary) and then database and SAP.

Hi markhus,

Not all but two processes are getting occupied by SAPSYS & stopping th virus scanner doesn't help.

The moment both of these processes stopped, cpu load comes down to 1%;but again on automatic starting of these processes load goes to 100%.

Pleases suggest.

Here is your problem:

Your swap file is not big enough/you don't have enough memory to use "flat". That memory model needs 20 - 30 % more memory than "view" - but is more efficient on virtualized instances (VMWare).

But be aware that "es/implementation = flat" is not supported any more on Windows 2003 (Note 1002587 - Flat Memory Model on Windows):

Note that due to the problems described in SAP note 1316558, the flat memory model is no longer supported on the Windows Server 2003 operating system

So I suggest you either increase the swap space or switch the model back to "view".

Hi Markus,

Our paging file size is 4097 Mb, while our Ram is 4 Gb.

So can you please tell how much paging file space needs to be increased.

Also please ellaborate the flat file memory model 7 view concept, sa i am unaware about this.

Thanks in advance.

> Our paging file size is 4097 Mb, while our Ram is 4 Gb.

According to the official installation guides you need at least a swap of two times the RAM

> So can you please tell how much paging file space needs to be increased.

Read the note I posted (Note 1002587 - Flat Memory Model on Windows)

Hi Markus,

Moreover our os is windows 2000 while the note referred by you 1316558 is related to windows 2003.

Thanks

Even worse. Windows 2000 does not support that model.

Change the profile parameter "es/implementation" to "view" and restart the instance.

Hi markus,

Our Os is windows 2000 32 bit server.

SAP version is R/3 4.7 C

DB: oracle 10.2

While the note 1002857 is related to 64 bit & i think to netwaeaver based system.

please suggest.

Thanks

Yes - and only there relevant. You have that parameter in your profile which is unsupported on Windows 2000.

Take out that parameter (which defaults to "view") or change it to "view" and restart the instance.

Hi markus,

I have checked the paramter es/implementation there can be only two values: std or map.

Moreover i think it is for unix based systems.

Please suggest.

Thanks

Joy garg.

Joy,

that's what I'm telling about.

You seem to insist on using a non-supported memory implementation, you asked for a suggestion. You're right, es/implementation is, especially on 640 based kernels, only supported under Unix system but you apparently set that parameter in your instance profile. And this is my question: why did you set it? (or a collegue of you)

So your issue is:

You configured an unsupported memory implementation for your operating system and you don't have enough memory/swap to support it.

If you don't believe me then open an OSS call at BC-OP-NT and ask the support. All I can say that in your instance (or default) profile that parameter is set and it's wrong - what you found out yourself.

Hi markus,

Thanks for you support.

Actually es* parmater doesn't exist in our instance profile, i have checked its value using Rz11.

Ok i will get the swap size increased & let u know back.

Thanks again for your support.

In my fourth reply I did suggest something. Markus is also suggesting same thing..But I do not have any idea why instead of trying suggestions you are continuing arguing.

Are you really facing any problem?

This is strange. The default is "view" (and has been for a long time).

> Ok i will get the swap size increased & let u know back.

I would rather set then

es/implementation = view

and restart the system. I'm pretty sure it will come up and work nicely.

Hi markus,

Sorry for asking you again, but i am getting confused. Now shall i set the parameter es/implementation to view & restart the system or increasing the swap size is alone sufficient.

Thanks

As I wrote before I would set the parameter (es/implementation = view) in the instance profile and restart the instance. If it does not come up then I'd check again the trace files and see if the error is still the same.

Hi Markus,

I have set the parameter es/implementation=view in instance profile & restart the instance, but the problem stiil persosts i.e two of the work processes remain occupied by SAPSYS 7 hence lowering the performance.

thanks

I have changed the parameter es/implementation = view in the morning 7 after restarting the instance chekd sm50,

the problem was still there;so i removed the parmatere again & reatart the instance. Moreover on adding the paramter the sysstem was giving message parmaeter unknown.

Thanks
