Hi,
To be a Netweaver EP consultant ...one has to have a good knowledge on the landscape scenarios of the Netweaver system and EP integration with non-sap or 3rd party components. Pros and cons of the architecture model. However, Consultant has to harmoniously suggest the business that what are the thing that can be leveraged by mounting on the portal ...the main goal would be like dealing with multiple lines of business which thrives the way for business process excellence.
Possessing good knowledge on following areas would really improve the quality of the consulting:

ABAP work flow for r/3 integration
Webservices , ESR and ESB (developing and consumption with complex authentication modes)
Licensing and product management.
SSO concepts and portal security.
Development infrastructure ( NWDI)
BASIS knowledge would really help you in understanding the performance and technical capabilities.
