Archive log fails on oracle hot standby DB after adding a datafile to live

Hi ,

Archive log fails on oracle hot standby DB after adding a datafile to live production database. Our Hot standby DB has five hours delay from the Production database. When we add a datafile with Production database, we have to wait five hours to the point when archive log fails in Hot standby database, then we add the datafile to hot standby db, and reapply the failed archive log and it works.

I am wondering for a solution if it is possible to add datafile production and hot standby at the same time. Is there any solution handy?

what is your Oracle version?

We had the same issue back in 2005 and we used the same manual procedure as you.

to lower the risk, we created multiple datafiles in advance with small size and used auto-extend options.

My oracle version is 10.2 64 bit .

Basically you are saying, nothing we can do, just to add datafiles in advance to minimize the risk

I was using ORacle 9 at the time.

Now, it seems that Oracle 10g might be able to take care of this for you with parameter standby_file_management

I did not try this option myself.

I just found out that my trick will not fully work

Why? SAP also adds a new directory when create a datafile. so, you will need to manually create that missing directory. That leaves you 5 hours after datafile creation to create that empty directory.
