Hi,
My stack is: openSUSE 11.1 -> vmware server 2.0.1 -> SLES 10 SP2 -> N4S.
N4S and SAPGUI are running on SLES 10 SP2, the GUI connects there. The SAPGUI installed on openSUSE 11.1, however, does not connect to the server in the VM. Error: partner 192.168.178.128:3201 not reached.
In the VM I have the loopback device with IP 127.0.0.1 and a virtual eth0 with IP 192.168.178.128. On openSUSE 11.1 I have a device vmnet8 with IP 192.168.178.1, connecting to the virtual eth0 in the VM.
I do not have the alias eth0:0 on the VM, since I ran into the same problem as Ashok described in the post I could "solve" the problem as described by Ashok in the Jul 3, 2009 reply to that post. I.e. my N4S uses the IP 192.168.178.128.
My /etc/hosts in the VM is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
# special IPv6 addresses
::1 localhost ipv6-localhost ipv6-loopback
fe00::0 ipv6-localnet
ff00::0 ipv6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ipv6-allnodes
ff02::2 ipv6-allrouters
ff02::3 ipv6-allhosts
127.0.0.2 linux-ra45.site linux-ra45
192.168.178.128 n4shost
The strange thing is the output of tcpdump on the VM, which shows, that the network connection should work, as far as I understand it. However, I cannot find any device with MAC 00:50:56:e3:2c:5e...

Thanks for any help, Karl.
It's highly embarrassing: My virtual device and firewall setup in the VM have not been correct.... Now it is working.
I beg your pardon!
