Hi,
a) Sequence: Write/Archive, Store & Delete
u2022 The write program creates an archive file. The data to be archived is then read from the database and is written to the archive files, on their respective logical file/folders we create (Unix directories)
u2022 The Store program stores the (copy of)Archive files into the Archive servers(ex, IXOS)
u2022 Delete program deletes the data from both u2018SAP data base as well as the Unix directoriesu2019
u2022 This process is fine & no issues
b) Sequence: Write/Archive & Delete
u2022 The write program creates an archive file. The data to be archived is then read from the database and is written to the archive files, on their respective logical file/folders we create (Unix directories)
u2022 Delete program deletes the data only from the SAP data base but not the files from the Unix directories!
u2022 Is this the normal behavior of the u2018deleteu2019 program when Store option is not used?
u2022 Similar experiences, solutions, document references on this particular behavior are welcome.
Thanks & Best Regards,
Senthil
Hi Senthil,
Yes this is the normal behavior.
When you store your archive files using Store option, then the archive files are directly accessed from the external storage, hence it is deleted from the Unix directory. If you are not storing the archive files into an external storage, then the files remain in the Unix directory and are accessible only when they remain in the unix directory. (if you delete these from the Unix directory, then there is no way for SAP to access the archived documents, as it is already deleted from the database).
Hope this helps,
Naveen

Hi Naveen,
Thanks for the clarification, that this is the normal behaviour from SAP Archiving functionality... that the Delete program would remove the data only from SAP data base, but leave the Archive files created in the Unix directories untouched.... when we do not use the Store(to external systems) option.
I could not find any SAP document reference that confirms this particular behaviour; I would appreciate if you/anyone could share the SAP document reference that confirms this behaviour.
Also please share your experience/solutions adopted to prevent the Unix directories from overflowing in similar cases.
Thanks
Senthil
Hello Senthil,
As a default, the Store step is Optional. It is a matter of cost of storage and availability of hardware.
Some customers prefer to transfer archive files from unix directories to external content servers like IXOS as this saves the cost of storage. Just remember the general convention mentioned below.
Cost of Storage in DB > Cost of Storage in Unix directory > Cost of Storage in IXOS
It is normally a management decision whether to Store or not.
Hope the information helps you.
