DR vs HA environment

Hi Experts - We have 2 data centers ( one is for alternative site) with SAP servers. My unix guys used to fail-over from one datacenter server to another. Also we have HA for ECC servers. I am sure they use another datacenter for DR also.

I am little confused, how the HA is setup. Is it possible to have include both data center ECC machines under one cluster environment, using switch over software?

Advance thanks for clarifying relation between HA / clustering / switchover / DR.

Thanks,

Raj

I presume they could be using standby or replicated databases

I believe this is a question you should ask to your team.

It really depends on your implementation, if you decide I do not see any reason why it can't be achived.

HA can be achivbed by implementing clustering. Swichover is normally referred to manual switch over to other node as opposed to failover (automatic). DR is used in case of disaster and it will involve restoring backups.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.

Thanks Juan and Manoj....It looks, if HA clustering using servers from both data center, would act as DR setup too ? Please comment on it.

As Juan said, database is replicated in HA environment in my case.

Thanks,

It depends on your perception. Normally DR is the term used when you restore the backup otherwise it is high availability. So in that sense my answer to your question is no.

Hope this clarifies your doubts.
