Deleting XML messages, database growing

Former Member
0 Kudos

I have a PI 7.11 SP7 MaxDB system that is being tested. It may have several hundred thousand XML messages sent through it each day. There is not a need to keep any messages, so we would like to have them deleted each night, but I am having trouble deleting messages from the database. I am not very experienced yet with SAP but have tried to go through a lot of the documentation and other requests for help, but still have a problem.<P>

Summary of steps: (report outputs are at the end)<p>

I've read and tried walking through SAP Note 872388.<p>

RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS shows many messages that are not in the retention period, yet can't be deleted.<p>

I've run RSXMB_CANCEL_MESSAGES several times, and it completes in one second and does not seem to do anything.<p>

RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS times out after 5 minutes without completion. (Possible separate question - is there a way to allow one job to run long or do I have to edit rdisp/max_wprun_time in the profile and restart to get this to work?)<p>

Because of the high volume of XML messages, per recommendation I'm using the 'switch' procedure for deletion.

I have the retention periods set down to 4 hours each. When SAP_BC_XMB_DELETE_001 runs each night, it sees 2 million messages, deletes none, yet takes over 19 hours to copy the messages from one table to another. This repeats every day.<p>

I have DROP_MAX_TABLE_LOAD set to 10%, yet the fill level is showing 1,043 % full.<p>

SAP_BC_XMB_HIST_DELETE_001 runs successfully, but usually shows 0 or very few messages.<p>

Following SAP Note 807615, I have tried going to http://<host>:<port>/MessagingSystem/archiving/reorgdb.jsp and manully setting the expiriation down to 1 day and also deleting messages 1 day old or more. Both result in 0 messages being affected. "0 messages have been succesfully removed from the database."<p>

One recommendation was to run db02 and check top n growing tables, but when I run db02 I get "DBM Error -16, command timeout exceeded", "The instance is not accessible for MaxDB CCMS".<p>

I assume I'm still overlooking something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.<p>

Output from reports:<p>

<br>

The program "RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS" has exceeded the maximum permitted uninterrupted runtime and has therefore been terminated.<p>

Jason, are you running RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS as a background job? Also, have you defined interfaces for archive and deletion in SXMB_ADM?

Philip,<br>

I had not tried running RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS in the background. I have started it now and it's at an hour and still going... I will post the result when it finishes.<br>

I have all the interfaces selected for archiving. I had previously had not had them marked for archiving, since I wanted them to be deleted instead. It is one or the other, correct?<p>

Aamir,<br>

I have the retention periods set very low already - 4 hours. If I run the RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS it still shows 0 messages to be archived. I had not posted the whole report before, here it is: <p>

RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS background job completed after 3 hours. I went to the spooler to get the output, but there doesn't seem to be any real data in it. Just the headings and titles. Is that what is expected? Any other ideas on what to try or what I did wrong?<p>

Dear Jason,

the distribution of message states and adapter states is the key information here. So you do need the outcome of report RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS.

There was an issue related to the redirection of the output to the spool. I have fixed this a couple of months ago. Please apply the correction instruction attached to OSS note 1325390 to your system and schedule report RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS once again to be executed as a batch job.

With the output of this report you will for most-likely find the required actions in OSS note 872388 which you already have read.

Best regards,

I was able to install the support package, run the report and get valid output from the spool. It looks like half the messages are in status 001 and half in status 014.<br>

Hi Jason,

great to hear that the redirection to spool is working.

Messages remain in message status 001 if their corresponding queue entry is deleted manually in transaction SMQ2. Status 001 means that from XI point of view these messages are scheduled for inbound processing and that it is up to the qRfc scheduler to fire up message processing. As the queue entry does not exist anymore, processing of these message never starts automatically. Messages in message status 001 need either to be restarted or canceled from SXMB_MONI.

Regarding message in status 014 (meaning: temporary error) please refer to OSS note 872388, section 5 -> k -> 1).

Best regards,

Harald Keimer

Harald,<br>

Just a quick update to let you know I did see your reply and am working on cancelling the messages. Yes, we had previously been using SMQ2 to delete messages from the queues after running tests. Finding and canceling 100's of thousands of messages in SXMB_MONI manually wasn't working very well. I now have RSXMB_CANCEL_MESSAGES working, but it is taking a long time. I broke the reports into months and May is currently at 104,000 seconds ( ~ 29hours) and still running...<br>

Well my efforts to clean up the database have still not succeeded. I was able to cancel the messages in status 14, but now I have many in status 3 and 21. In fact it seems like the number of messages has increased way more than the number we have received in the past week. Especially the tables at the bottom which all seemed to grow 3x.<br>

Hi Jason,

great to hear that you are moving forward! Messages in status 21 can now be reorganized. You can easily verify this by running report RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS once again. In the output focus on lines

 Message and adapter status is considered in the following
- Msgs not in retention period (can be archived): <n>

Just start archiving to get rid of these message.

Regarding tables SXMSPVERS, SXMSCLUP and SXMSCLUR: the factor 3 in number of records is expected here. This tells me that you are processing small asynchronous messages with no logging. Is this correct?

When messages are deleted the number of records in these tables will decrease by a factor of 3 (after deletion of 100,000 messages there will be ~1,000,000 records in these tables).

Best regards,

Yes, REORG now shows archivable messages!<br>

Message and adapter status is considered in the following<br>

The archive job seemed to work last night and I have lots of archive files. I did some more reading and found that I needed to still delete the messages after archiving them, correct? I used transaction SARI to pick the archive files and started the deletes. The ones for recent files worked ok, but we had apparently deleted some of the older archive files in Linux, so the delete jobs are failing. Is there a process to still remove the messages from the database even though the archive file has been deleted?

Hi Jason,

yes, you finally need to delete the messages. Archiving is a 2-step process. During step 1 the messages are read from PI persistence layer and stored to archive files. Step 2 reads the previously written messages from archiving files in order to verify data integrity. Finally messages are deleted from PI persistence.

From your anwer I understand that you have scheduled archiving (step 1), but execute deletion (step 2) manually. For convenience you may want to run the deletion (step 2) automatically. To do so run transaction AOBJ, double-click archiving object BC_XMB and select Customizing Settings. In the section for delete jobs select option Start Automatically. In case a popup appears when saving the change asking for the name of a package, enter SXMSPERSIST.

Archiving in PI is desinged to be restarted whenever an error occurs. I.e. if there is an issue during step 2 (for example if archiving file have been deleted from the file system) the messages remain in PI persistence. The very next archiving session will handle the message again and store them to a new archiving file.

Best regards,

Harald

I've been working with this a couple weeks now and I think it is stable. I thought I'd summarize what I've learned in a final post.<br>

<br>

Analysis:<br>

- Run: RSXMB_SHOW_STATUS<br>

- - If it times out, run in background and look at spool output (SP01)<br>

- - If output is all 0's, apply patch (see note 1325390 )<br>

- Run: RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS<br>

- - If it times out, run in background and look at spool output (SP01)<br>

- - It will say if messages are ready to be deleted or archived

<br>

What to do with messages in different states:<br>

- Messages in state 001: --> Run RSXMB_CHECK_MSG_QUEUE<br>

- - They should then move to state 021<br>

- Messages in state 003: --> Run Delete procedure<br>

- Messages in state 014: --> Run RXSMB_CANCEL_MESSAGES<br>

- - They should then move to state 021<br>

- Messages in state 021: --> Run Archive procedure<br>

- - Enable automatic delete after archive, otherwise run manual archive delete procedure (SARA)<br>

<br>

With MaxDB, the database will still show a high usage at first, even after all the messages are removed from the database. It seems to take 2 days for the automatic reorganization to take effect. Even though we are deleting all our messages each night, I've had to make sure there is several days worth of space in the database.<br>

It may have several hundred thousand XML messages sent through it each day. There is not a need to keep any
messages, so we would like to have them deleted each night, but I am having trouble deleting messages from the database. I am
not very experienced yet with SAP but have tried to go through a lot of the documentation and other requests for help, but still
have a problem

When the deletion job is not helping, you can try to keep the trace (logging) to a minimum level (min. is 1...max is 3)......this will result into less details going into the DB...may be then you will have some space left....

Some good suggestions are given in this thread..check if they help you

Abhishek.

Abhishek,<br>

I have the Integration Engine Runtime Trace_Level set to 0. Is that the trace you were talking about or is there another? <br>

I had read that thread before. It is where I saw to try note 872388, transaction DB02, and report RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS. I will look through it again.<br>

Thanks,<br>

>>RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS shows many messages that are not in the retention period, yet can't be deleted

Did you configure message archiving/deletion after the messages started going through XI.

Archiving/deletion takes place only after the jobs have been configured,so if any messages went through XI before archiving/deletion was scheduled it wont be flagged for archiving and will continue to sit on XI system and show in RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS as out of retention period.

I had a similar issue with the total number of message size.about 1.5 million to be archived.

in sxmb_moni,set the retention period to be very small,save this(don't run the archiving/deletion report right now),then go to RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS and see the messages whcih can be archived,if they are within reasonable limit,then schedule the archiving job in sxmb_adm(don't schedule the deletion job right now).keep on doing this until all the messages have been flagged for archiving(will show in RSXMB_SHOW_REORG_STATUS ).i was archiving 50,000 messages in a single chunk and it took about 1 hr.

Now run the deletion job in sxmb_adm,this will take quiet a bit of time so make sure that you run it at night or whenever the load is minimal on XI.

Thanks

Aamir
