We are about to make a new implementation of SAP Solution Manager in our SAP installation (25 - 30 SAP servers)
It will be installed on Win2003 OS. The installation wil be used mainly for Solution Monitoring and Collaboration. The Service Desk part will not be implemented.
In sizing the Hardware for the productive System the discussion has come up whether the are recommendations saying that the ABAP and the JAVA stack should be installed on separate servers.
This discussion is not mentioned in the Sizing Guide for SAP Solution Manager.
Are such recommendations from SAP existing - for Solution Manager - og maybe for SAP servers in general.

because SolMan is based on NW you have to go through the technical planning guide at https://websmp206.sap-ag.de/~sapidb/011000358700005531212005E.PDF
you should make a pro and cons list for your scenario.
Questions to consider:
- vertical scalability
- horizontal scalability
- SCS
- ASCS
