In Oracle, there are files/tables that are frequently used as follows. Can any MaxDB guru
give their equavalents in MaxDB? They just need to be w/ a similar functionality, NOT
necessarily exacrly the same. Thanks!
alert_SID.log
initSID.ora
listener.ora/tnsnames.ora
controlSID.dbf
oratab
sapusers
V$backup
> alert_SID.log
knldiag, knldiag.err
> initSID.ora
parameters are configured using "dbmcli", DBMGUI or the DB-Studio (a bit like the Oracle spfile), the init<SID> mechanism on Oracle is also very old.
> listener.ora/tnsnames.ora
xuser (executable to configure the users)
> controlSID.dbf
Stored in the database parameter section as well
> oratab
> sapusers
something like that does not exist.
> V$backup
dbm.knl
To start working with MaxDB I would not use the "what's the equivalent" approach but rather try to get the database as a complete new software. Better question would be "how do I...." (do backups/restores, find out why the database is not coming up etc.)
Install a system based on MaxDB and install the GUI (or the new DBSTudio) and play a bit around

Markus is right - getting some hands-on experience is for sure the most efficient way to get a grasp on the conceptual differences of MaxDB compared to Oracle.
As a starter you may also like to read some of my blog entries of the mini-series "Mind the gap...".
Simple search for "mind the gap" and "blogs" and you should find them.
Here's the link to the first issue ['Mind the gap ...'|https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/weblogs?blog=/pub/wlg/7595] [original link is broken] [original link is broken] [original link is broken];.
