in the sap pi help documents, i saw:
For communicating using proxy technology, an adapter is also required in the Integration Engine, at least on the receiver side.
why do we need the PI adapter, as proxy technology is adapterless communication.

adding to what is already said, adapterless is more like the message being retained i.e XML from XI is send and received in R3 as an XML itself. The protocol remains the same unlike other adapters say the file, where a protocol like FTP will come into play.

adapterless in this sentence means that the same protocol and message is used
nothing more - but we still have an "adapter"
