PI - why should not be used for data migration during pre/post go-live.

Hi PI experts,

we are doing SAP implementation (MDM, HCM, MM, FI etc) in a landscape involving nonSAP applications.

there is already lot of data in non-SAP applications, that needs to be migrated to/from others like MDM, HCM, MM etc.

the business guys would like to have this kind of data replication/migration happen thru PI interfaces.

but SAP says PI should not really used as a migration tool for mass uploads. As I know PI an EAI or data exchange tool.

are there any strong points(functional/technical) why PI should not be used for mass data uploads/migrations.

thanks in advance,

Ganesh.

Hi Ganesh,

Data Migration being a one-time activity, the return on inverstment for all the effort that you put in SAP PI interface development ,is far less when compared to the standard migration tools provided in the backend systems. This might be the counter business case for use of PI for data migration.

First of all Business Guys should not have a say in which Technology should be used. A Technical Architect should recommend the best available Technical solution.

Every tool has its functions & PI is not a Data Migration tool.. Use LSMW or BAPI's (as recommended by SAP) for data migration.. or there are other tools in the Market like BOA..(Back Office Associates) specializing in SAP data migration, use it... http://www.boaweb.com/

PI license is based volume based. If you like to use it like migration tool, you would end up paying tens of thousands as licence fee to SAP.

the above point may be good enough one to convey business guys of non-SAP applications to write data-migration programs themselves independent of PI.

thanks,

Hello,

PI is used for current data transfer. Real time data transfer like Purchase order, Invoice etc etc.

In your case you want to transfer data from one system to other. So u need batch data processing.

So go through ETL etc etc tool. EAI is tools are used for real time data not for mass uploads.

Thanks and Regards
