Archiving - encryption of data?

Hi all -

We are just starting to look at utilizing archiving for our ECC 6.0 instance. I was asked a question by a business user whether SAP encrypts archived data. My understanding is that the data is compressed (up to 5 times) but that it isn't actually encrypted with SAP-standard archiving.

Could someone please let me know if that is correct or if SAP does utilize encryption for archiving? If so, what type of encryption does it use?

Your help is appreciated. Thank you!

Abby

Hi,

You are correct. During archiving, data is automatically compressed by up to a factor of 5. However, if the data to be archived is stored in cluster tables, no additional compression takes place.

But SAP never talked about encryption of archived data. Any way compression data will not be in a readable format.

Looks like there are thirdparty vendors who will provide this functionlity.

Archiving should transfer over with archiving (depending on your archive database).  Dolphin has a tool AMC - which is very in-expensive that can put encryption into archived files (old or new) and re-encrypted transfered archive records.

Hi Abby,

In archiving process SAP does not encrypt/decrypt any data. It does use compression upto 5.

Best solution for you is show ur business user any archive file that is created at O.S level. Its not in readable format. Same file does get store in storage system.
