DB20 on iSeries?

Is anyone aware of whether or not DB20 is a valid transaction for an SAP system in the iSeries? We have a consultant in working on a general ledger migration and in the past she's used DB20 to tweak statistics on a tables. I've not personally used this transaction before, but she said it looks different on the iSeries than she's used to and it's not acting properly.

I didn't know if it was a problem with our system or if it's not supported because of the way SAP runs on the iSeries. I haven't found any notes related to DB20 and the iSeries.

If it's not supported, is there some other way to tweak the table statistics? Thank you.

Hi TJ,

no, DB20 is not needed on iSeries ))

... and therefore not available ...

=> just tell your consultant to skip all of these steps in the guide ...

Volker - as always, thank you for the prompt response! Why is it not needed on the iSeries? Is the same functionality performed by anything else (SQL packages?) or it's just irrelevant all together? I don't know that there were steps she was following, she was just worried about performance because it was acting slow and she wanted to tweak the statistics.

Hi TJ,

yes, you got it

It is SQL-Packs & SQL-Plan-Chache ....

As DB2 works "operatorless", you cannot really tweak it - at least not with DB20 ...

Hi TJ.

Volker already gave the answer why we don't use DB20 on our database. But I would like to know whether your consultant was following his own list of steps to do or if some official SAP guide was telling to use DB20 during the migration. In that case we should add a platform specific paragraph into that guide. I would really appreciate if you could provide me that information.

Hi Jan,

most likely the official guide ...

Just have a look into the Unicode Conversion guide for 6.40 and most likely of 7.0 ...

=> There you will find at several stages DB20 or other update statistics requests ...

e.g.: 6.40 Unicode MDMP Conversion:

2.4.3 - 6. After the nametabs have been successfully created, you should update the database statistics for the alternative active nametabs DDNTF_CONV_UC and DDNTT_CONV_UC in order to improve the performance of the R3load export procedure.

Perform the statistics update on database level. You can expect a runtime of at least several minutes.

Jan - I emailed and asked our consultant. I haven't received an answer though. I'll let you know what I find out, but I didn't want you to think I was ignoring you. I appreciate you checking.

I just wanted to let you know that the SAP Note 551344 which contains the mentioned guidelines was updated. All the attached guides now contain a statement that it is not neccessary to run transaction DB20 on IBM i.

Thanks for bringing up this topic so we could improve our documentation.

Best regards,

Jan
