Upgrade failing in STOP_SCS_INITIAL phase

Hello All,

We are upgrading from XI 3.0 ( NW2004) to PI 7.1 and the upgrade is

failing in the phase STOP_SCS_INITIAL.

During the Java stack upgrade we are getting error message "An error has

occurred during phase STOP_SCS_INITIAL." The upgrade is unable to

proceed both on the Java stack as well as on the ABAP stack until this

error is cleared. I am also unable to find any notes on the matter

The execution of UPGRADE/UPGRADE/STOP_SCS_INITIAL ended in error.

Could not stop J2EE Engine instance with name SCS and number 01 of the

standard system.

!!!!!!!!! anyone faced similar issue please help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had a similar issue while upgrading our BI (NW 7.0) to ehp1 SP5. We had our ABAP instance shutdown and only the message server and enque server running in the SCS instance which could not be stopped by ehpi. Manually stopped from MMC and ehpi started continuing from the point of failure..without any further issues...

Hi,

My major concern is dont play with system with out having proper knowledge.

Because while doing upgrade u need not to stop the SAP system manually, it has to be run. you can chek this details in upgrade guide. the SAP System will be stopped by upgrade itself prior to Downtime_Begin phase.I can understand you are facing the issues with SCS instances stoping but for that you have to check the proper reason, then you have to try stoping manually.

1) How you started the Prepare for the ABAP and As well for the Java.

Can you post the logs from the JUpgrade directory. which sits in /usr/sap/Jupgrade/logs.

Experts please correct me if i am wrong.

we had rebooted the system, but still it is showing the same error when we are continuing with the upgrade

When you rebooted the system, that time SCS must be stopped..Then you have to continue the upgrade without starting it....

Have you restarted the system ?....If not then please check upgrade logs in deeper because it looks like problem is not with Stopping of SCS instance ... Could you please paste more logs from upgrade directory ?

Is your SAP systems is up ? If yes, then please try to stop via SMICM and Go to J2ee Instance (Local) --> Send Hard Shutdown -> give hard shutdown without restart.

Sometimes it happens that it not able to free up some processes which are in hang status.

if still not possible could you please check and paste logs in work directoy of SCS instance ...

Have you tried to STOP your SCS instance manually ? and then continued with your upgrade..

if you will get this error again then please paste last two log files of the upgrade...
