SAP Kernel update

Former Member

Hi all

I updated my kernel from 160 to 175

When i log into SAP and execute SM51 it still shows 160 as the kernel patch level ????????

The SAR files are correct because i used the same files to update DEV and QA. and the same process.

The serve is not part of a cluster either.

Any ideas ??

Thanx in advance

It looks like kernel is not updated yet. Did you updat manually or via JSPM? Cross- check you target location if files are copied manually.

It is not a Java update

It seems like there were file permission problems when updating

it did not replace the files in the dir i copied to

If it is a Central system then you can do as follow.

login with Root

take a backup of /sapmnt/SID/exe/*

Login with <sidadm>

./SAPCAR -xvf Kernel_EXE -R /sapmnt/SID/exe

./SAPCAR -xvf Kernel_DB -R /sapmnt/SID/exe

then login with Root

cd /sapmnt/SID/exe

./saproot.sh <SAPSID>

then login with <sidadm>

execute --> disp+work

Login from your <sidadm> user and execute disp+work and tell us the output and also make sure the permission of kernel files are proper or not.

So you can see the it is not able to read the new patch that might be due to wrong permission of kernel files. You have to correct that.

it seems kernel has not been updated correctly. As kernel files are placed in two or more directories.

There is a file sapcpe.exe which copied all new files to other directories. might be this file doesnt exist in your run dir so you need to copy new files to all those directories.

Hope this information will help you.

Hi all

Thank for all the answers

If i look at the directory that i extracted the files in i see a modified date of Aug 2008

But if i look at my dir that i copied the files to i see a March 2008 modified date

Which tells me that my copy process never over wrote the files

I copied the files as root

Would i need to copy the files as <sid>adm to have the correct permissions so the the files are over written with the new files.

Just wanna get all my possible actions together before i take the system down again

you probably asked the same question in another forum. Anyways, I found this answer interesting:

you must update all kernel directories.

so, that would be one of the following, depending on your SAP version:

X:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\run

X:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\exe\[n]uc\[os-type]

X:\usr\sap\SID\DVEBMGS[xx]\exe
