Hi Surya,

The petroleum industry is usually divided into three major components: Upstream, midstream and downstream, though midstream operations are usually included in the downstream category.

Upstream - Upstearm oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the searching for and the recovery and production of crude oil and natural gas. The upstream oil sector is also known as the exploration and production (E&P) sector.

The upstream sector includes the searching for potential underground or underwater oil and gas fields, drilling of exploratory wells, and subsequently operating the wells that recover and bring the crude oil and/or raw natural gas to the surface.

MiddleStream - The midstream industry processes, stores, markets and transports commodities such as crude oil, natural gas, natural gas liquids (LNGs, mainly ethane, propane and butane) and sulphur.

DownSTream - The downstream oil sector is a term commonly used to refer to the refining of crude oil, and the selling and distribution of natural gas and products derived from crude oil. Such products include liquified petroleum gas (LPG), gasoline or petrol, jet fuel, diesel oil, other fuel oils, asphalt and petroleum coke.

just to add to Sunil's reply....

SAP's IS-OIL product has been developed to cater to the needs of the Up/Mid/Downstream processes in the oil industry (as described by sunil above) and thus SAP IS-OIL product has some modules which are relevant for the Upstream processes, such as PRA and JVA and RLM and some which are relevant for the Mid/Downstream, such as TD, TAS/TPI, SSR, TSW..

Do you know if SAP RLM can be used without having SAP IS-Oil? (just as can be done with JVA)

Thanks in advance and regards

Hi

No..you need to activate IS Oil functionalitiesd in ECC6.0 versions onward to use RLM ( Transaction SFW5).Before ECC 6.0, IS Oil was an add on / Bolt on product.

After activation, if you want to use only RLM and no other IS oil functionality like Exchange, TSW etc., it can be done.

Cheers !!!

Difference between Upstream and Downstream in the shortest possible way :

Upstream industry : Exploration of Crude Oil and production

Downstream industry : Refining, marketing, supply and trading, and transportation.

Hope this clarifies your query.

Hello Surya,

The Oil&Gas industry are divided into three sectors: upstream, midstream and downstream.

Midstream is sometimes used, sometimes not. It refers to the transmission of crude oil or natural gas.

Why do we speak about up- and downstream? Just pretend you were a refinery. Everything that comes to you from the wells is upstream. Everything that goes in the direction of the customer - or goes away from the refinery is downstream. Now the tricky thing is that refineries are usually part of the downstream sector of the Oil&Gas industry ...

Within SAP there are multiple solutions that cover upstream, not necessarily only in the IS-Oil layer:

IS-Oil: PRA, JVA, PSA, HPM/QCI, RLM, VMIS

EA_APPL: GHO under development, PM, PP, QM, MRS, PS, PPM, HCM, etc.

In Midstream / Downstream there are also some solutions available in IS-Oil:

TSW, HPM/QCI, and so on.

Here for sure you can also utilise the standard SAP applications such as PM/PP etc.

Cheers, Axel
