Dear All,
What is the difference between field catalog and infostructure in archiving and why and when do we need to create them.
Is it mandetory to use Z infostructure in all standard Archiving Objects?
Thanks

Hi Mahesh,
Field Catalog is a collection of fields for indexing the archive files. Infostructures are defined on basis of field catalogs. fields of an infostructure are always based on a corresponding field catalog. So essentially field catalog provides the structure for defining an infostructure.
- sequential access to archive files are tedious and slow
- application specific archive indices are not available for all objects
hence SAP has provided the tool archive information system which allows us to configure our own indices to the archive files based on infostructures (and field catalogs)
it is not mandatory to use Z infostructures in all standard archiving objects. standard field catalogs / infostructures are provided for most of the archive objects with the standard archive information system. you should create Z field catalogs / infostructures only if the standard field catalog / infostructure is not available or if the standard field catalog / infostructure doesnt meet your requirements.
Thanks,
Naveen
