MaxDB not taking Incremental Backups

Although I perform full backups, everytime I am trying to take an Incremental Backup it states that a full backup has never been taken. I do this usin the DB GUI

Can someone please suggest why the DB Gui does not recognize the full backups?

thanks...

Hi Michael,

could it be that you run the database in Log mode Overwrite?

Lars,

Yes, actually I do run it in Log mode overwrite. Would that cause the issue that I mentioned above? That is really interesting....

I am going to try this out and get back to you...

Thanks...

Yes it would.

Incremental backups are basically the changes pages in comparison to the last data backup.

The last data backup is regarded as OK when the database is not longer in HISTLOST state.

But this is always the case when you run the database in log mode overwrite.

The reasoning for this is pretty simple.

If you want backups - take them.

Do log backups, don't overwrite your log.

If you don't want backups, you don't need incremental backups.

Also: the more pages get changed over time, the bigger the incremental backup becomes, since it always refers to the last full data backup.

Eventually it will be no benefit in taking the incremental backup at all.

One additional thing:

Usually incremental backups are used in cases where - for whatever reason - a full data backup cannot be done in time. The downside is of course that you cannot use the incremental backups without the full data backup and that your recovery procedure becomes one step more complicated.

Yep, trying out is always the best choice - next to reading the documentation
