SAP kernel support for DB2 UDB Connection Concentrator feature

Former Member

As some of you know, DB2 UDB supports connection pooling and connection concentrator features, in particular connection concentrator helps reduce the resources each agent allocates when the connection is idle. In SAP-DB2 installations, every SAP work process results in a db2agent on the database server, In a large SAP production instance with several hundred work processes you will find equal number of db2agents on the database server which most of the time idle.

Does anyone know if SAP kernel/DBSL is going to take advantage of connection concentrator feature ?

Hi Raja,

connection concentration is one of the DB2 features that should be transparant to the SAP work processes. The feature requires some careful tuning of the AGENT parameters in the DB CFG. To be honest we have not tested this feature in the SAP environment yet and we have no feedback from customers about this feature.

On 64 bit OS inactive agents should not be of much harm since those processes can be paged out by the OS. We have recently thought about using the connection concentrator as a workaround on customer systems whitch run on memory restricted 32 bit OS.

Because of missing experience/feedback we are not actively recommending connection concentrator but we are of course willing to support you. If you are going to use this feature please let us know about your experiences.

Regards

Frank
