In case of communication using adapters, the message flow wil be something like this:
Source R/3 system ->XI Adapter Engine -> XI INtegration Engine->XI Adapter Engine->TargetR/3 System
In case of Proxies, which is adapterless communication, the message flow is like this.
Source R/3 system(Integration Engine) -> XI INtegration Engine->Target R/3 System(Integration Engine)
