What is the use of serial number profile in general across modules like MM, SD, PP and PM.

Hi

When u speak abt serial no, it is not widely used in Plant Maintenance. Since you have already created equipment for all the components... Since that is sufficient for plant maintenance to work on it.

When it comes to Customer Service, where u need to track the equipments installed at customer site...

Say i am a Diesel engine manufacturer... i have sold 100 nos of engines all over in india.. Engines will have different types... each type will differ in each components and serail no..

Wat i do is... create a material and Serial with respect to the client, install the equipment in that functional location. Since the serail no , will be used for the clients to give damaged part, spares etc... bu tthe equipment will be used for us to create order, work on it... etc etc..

This is relevant to PM..

For SD, MM and PP...

For PP... u produce many components... u need to maintain some number to check for the history...

if u produce 100 components of same config... u send to different place... u need to track it... so u used to create a serial no for the components...

In MM... u need to maintain the same components produced in PP... so.. u maintain a serail no.

For SD, wat ever u sell a material, during delivery it needs a serial no. for the sold components to be tracked...

For all this purpose u have a serail no profile... which indicates, when this serial no to be created... during production, during storage, during selling or during Maintenance...

For Example Consider U have 50 Nos of Motors installed across plants , U want to know the exact location & tracking of each Motors , This Can Only done by Assigning a serial number to each Motor.

If you want to send One Motor of above for Rewinding , without serial number its difficult to track , form material master you can get current stock , consumption not track of particular motor

Serial Number + Material Number is unique , for Material Number 1000000 if you assign serial number 1 , this Combination cannot be repeated any where.

For Your Knowledge.

1.One material can have "n" number of serial number

2.inventory management is possible.

3.Same Serial Number can Occur for different material number

Hi,

Serial number profile defines when were how the serial numbers are generated, are mandatory, required etc.

the profile contols entire serial numbers activation. without Serial number profile there can be no serial numbers

Hi,

I can talk about MM- PM. The serial number is the link between material & equipment. What is material in MM functionality could be the equipment in PM functionality(not always though) and the serial number links both of them. In short Equipment = Material + Sr. No.

So, the use is to track your material thru serial number.

The serial number profile tells how serial number will behave etc. and this is possible to assign in material master under "Plant /Stor-2" view of the material master.

Serial number is also a master record, as it will be unique for a particular material. The serial number will be mostly given at the time of delivery. But this can be effectively controlled by the serializing procedure. We can create a serial number by IQ01. As and when you do transaction with serialised material, the status will get updated.

Equipment also have same like serial number, this can be effectively created with transaction IQ01, activate the equipment view
