NWDS installation - initial update phase fails parsing "update policy" file

I've just downloaded NWDS and run the installer. After installation a dialogue box advises that NWDS will now start and connect back to the update site to find updates and new components.

However, the update terminates with an error parsing the "update policy" saying it encountered a premature end of file. If I search for new features instead, I get

Network connection problems encountered during search.
  Unable to access "http://nwds.update".
Unable to access site: "http://nwds.update" [Server returned HTTP response code: "502 Proxy Error ( The host was not found. )" for URL: http://nwds.update.]

Server returned HTTP response code: "502 Proxy Error ( The host was not found. )" for URL: http://nwds.update.

Pointing my web browser directly to http://nwds.update gets a "host not found" error as does a

ping nwds.update

from my workstation.

Seems to me I need to be adding a new update site to the NWDS configuration used by help->install updates but what site? Or have I completely misunderstood the error message and should I, therefore, be doing something completely different?

Seems like I did misunderstand the error message and the installation process.

The error relates to the configuration of the software update options - in the configuration dialogue it is necessary to add an appropriate proxy host and port (the default was connect directly to the internet) and to select the "use this proxy for SSL" checkbox and then restart the NWDS. After this I was prompted for my SAPNet/SDN userid and password and the updates became available.

After installing the basic updates I was then able to see the additional components so that my Eclipse environment could download some plug-ins to become an SAP NWDS environment.
