Hello friends,
few questions:
1. what is the use of maintenance certificates
2. Can they be only applied in ABAP systems or both ABAP+JAVA
3. Is there a minimum patch level needed in the system for applying maintenance certificates
Rohit
Hi Rohith,
yes you are correct the validity period of the Maintenance certificate in SLICENSE is 3 months, if you are using manual method, means downloading from SMP and installation with SLICENSE.
as Juan said If you are using Automatic Distribuion method in solman then no need to bother about validity because, solman will sends the request to SMP and it will collects the updated Maintenance certificate and it will update in satilite systems.
please have a look on the below links.

Is it true that maintenance certificate expires in 3 months?

Well it doesn't mattter if you use Automatic Distribution of Maintenance Certificates as part of Solman EHP1, because it will update the certificates itself.

but I guess the maintenance certificate is applicable for JAVA systems also
Please all correct me If I am wrong,I have to apply the maintenance certificates,I feel this is the way:
1. I have a pure ABAP system-Maintenance certificate can be applied directly through SLICENSE
2. I have a ABAP+JAVA system- Maintenance certficate has to be applied in ABAP through SLICENSE
and in JAVA through Visual Administrator -> Services -> Licensing Adapter
3. In JAVA system- In a pure JAVA system Maintenance certificate has to be applied through Visual Administrator -> Services -> Licensing Adapter
Please suggest is it the right method

1. Yes
2. Yes
3.Yes
You have to apply the mailntenance certificate for Java System also. for the Java System this path is correct "Visual Administrator -> Services -> Licensing Adapter"
Further more to add Automatic distribution is also possible if the Satelite system is connected to Solution Manager

Hello Rohit,
1. As of 2009, SAP requires Maintenance Certificates for all 7.0 and higher based Systems for the Support Pack Installation.
2. As of now, Maintenance Certificates is only applicable for ABAP.
3. There is no such minimum patch level for Maintenance Certificates. It is required for all components of NetWeaver 7.0 or higher products. From 2009, you can perform the automatic distribution of Maintenance Certificates vial Solution Manager. Please find the following URL for details
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_smehp1/helpdata/en/89/a7c08d740c4cffb491f98801f17d30/content.htm
Also, you can request the Maintenance Certificate similar to SAP license request in Marketplace. Please check OSS note 1240265 for details.

Gautam
