SAP mail is just same as we use e-mail. Please go throug T-code SO01.

Is SAPmail used to send mails only to SAP users in a client, can't it be used to send mails outside like gmail, yahoo?

You can also send the SAP mail to external address also provided that external address management is activated.
For the same you can take help of yorur BASIS consultant.
