Control has to return to the server to change the lead selection on the context node. We already use an AJAX approach for delta handling so that the entire page is not refreshed. Only deltas are injected into the page using DOM Infusion.

I'm not sure how we got on the subject of tab switching or what that has to do with Table or ALV leadSelection. It is true that the Tab has two options - a client side switch where all the inner tab content is rendered first on the server and all sent to the client or a server side switch where on the visible tab is rendered and sent to the client. Each approach has pros and cons and appropriate use cases. However this is functionality that is unique to the Tab and there is nothing here that can be applied to the way the Table or ALV render.
