What is the difference between an agent and a user?

In transaction BBP_PD for example, where you have your workflow details, you have the agent e.g John Smith and user JOH1SMI (srm logon) .

My SRM uses the BADI n steps and i'm am getting a case where agent is not equal to the user.My requirement for the time being is to find out what the difference between the two is functionally?

USER is the userid or the position or the orgunit to which the workitem will go.

Agent is the name that you could be associated with the USER.

Say you have a user req01 (first name req_first and lastname req_last) associated with 50001789

USER field in the WF is assigned to a position 50001789, the workitem will reach the user associated with position 50001789 which is req01 and the value of AGENT is 'req_first req_last'.
