Utility of PI server in the land scape !

Hi Experts,

I hav a query for you. Consider a Idoc to Fie scenerio. and similarly file to idoc scenerio. From FTP to PI To R/3 is the path .

The businees is to send certain R/3 data to an FTP server. Similarly, the data from FTP should be send to R/3 .

Now at the time of PI server aquisition,, the question arises,, this busines requirement can be done without a PI server in landscape. So what is the utility of a PI server. We can write a program in R/3 to download the file in the FTP server. Similarly another program can pick up a file from FTP path into R/3. So both ways can be done without the very need of a PI server.

In this situation,, how do I justify te need for a PI server, apart from the REUSIBILITY application..Because based on the justification , PI server will be procured, and PI consultans will be hired.

Experts, comment please !

Arnab

Rajesh, probably said it all...

Arnab,

give them an example of a telephone exchange.....why are they needed...u can very well have a direct connection between you and your freinds.....but u are routed through telephone exchange...so that there is no mess of point to point connections...also it is easy to monitor...if any problem occurs in the telephone line u directly approach the exchange...

Hi,

Yes I agree with you., In the current business requirement with simple number of interface( many be max 50) there is not need of XI. But In the cutomer landscape there might be addition of new system which again needs to inolve in integration. That means to monitor/Support there should be a dedicated system which does this. So, XI plays an important role in the complex System Lands Scapes.

Hello,

Adavantages of using PI

1. Loose coupling can be acheived results in maintanence of systems will be easier

2. If some transformation loggic has to be applied then it can be easily done using PI

3. you can receive acknowledgement about the transfer in case of async scneario through PI

4. More over you can eliminate Point to Point connections will result in your archectiture easier to enchance if required .

Yes, you are right, it can be done without PI also but the answer to your question "why to use PI" is below.

1. If there are multiple FTP servers where you have to send your R/3 data in different ways and different formats then you have to use PI to simplify the complexity.

2. The same mapping concept can be used for multiple scenarios.

3. Its just like using the printer instead of a typewriter

Hi ,

Your requirement looks simple and without PI you can achieve it,

with out PI implementation you can save money also when if looking for PI "From FTP to PI To R/3 is the path . The businees is to send certain R/3 data to an FTP server. Similarly, the data from FTP should be send to R/3 "

But in your ladscape there is other systems involving then you have to think about PI.

PI will provied greater flexibilty to develop, monitor and enhancements in future.

Its fully depend on number of buissiness systems and number of interfaces.

Raj
