Hi Sandeep,

can someone suggest that why not all Masters are created and maintained in MDM?

what are technical issues and business issues?

if I have multiple systems and all are using the master data then why not MDM can maintain all master data?

To start, SAP-MDM is a tool to store the master data only. It can store any kind of master data. The funda here is that the master data is static and does not change so often. For example, if you consider the employee master data, its Employee Id and Employee name, DOB etc which are static and do not change.

MDM is built with a capability of storing Master data and not transactional data. The transactional data change every minute and MDM cant manage it. Hence, until you are not storing any transactional data in MDM, I do not see any problem of storing any kind of master data in MDM.

Coming to your question, SAP has come up with business content of few Masters such as Material, Customer, Article, Employee etc. The business content has predefined repository with standard fields and tables. This helps us all to practice and at the same time understand the Master as well.

If you want to use other masters apart from the Business content, you can go ahead and create a repository from scratch and till the data is not very frequently changing MDM will support your need.

For each Master you can create a repository and with MDM 7.1, you can even have 2 main tables which will help you in storing different masters in a same repository if required. Also, if your Multiple systems are using the same masters, definitely you should maintain your Master data in MDM as it would be consolidated at one place. After consolidation, you can even start creating master data in MDM.

Hope I have understood your question and the above info helps.

Thanks and Regards

Sandesh,

It is possible to maintain all master data in SAP MDM. It depends on the business requirement.

Some time back I have read in a utility company they are maintaining regional account group in MDM. And one of my friends is working in shipping company there they are maintaining Vessels #(Ship) in MDM.

Technical and Business issue can't be generalize for all the Master Data, It all depends on the business requirement and the design of Master Data Maintenance process.

Thanks,

Hi Sandesh,

SAP MDM is capable enough to handle most of the master data.

That's the reason SAP has come out with predelivered business content for most of the master data which includes:

- Customer

- Vendor

- Material

- Products

- Articles

- Employee

- Business partners

etc......

The master objects that SAP has identified which can have master data problems are included in to the Business Content for management of master data.

The only reasons that i see here for not including all the Masters are:

- The excluded Master data objects may be to complex to structure them in MDM for maintainence

- The excluded Master data objects may in most of the cases not be in a very bad shape to provide MDM solution to it

- SAP has left to the Customer to model the Master in MDM according to his requirement and design.

The most important point to note here is that MDM is here to provide a solution for Master data and Master data problems,It is not capable to handle Transactions or transcational data.

So for Buisness objects with more of transcational information required cannot be handled within MDM as an effective solution.

You can have a look at the below links to understand the data modelling of the buisness content for MDM provided by SAP:

The question is exactly that why not MDM can take care of all masters other than

- Customer

- Vendor

- Material

- Products

- Articles

- Employee

like company code master , Account master, Agreement record, profit center, cost center, rate master, Invoice terms etc.....
