did you mean why we need to have custom adapter modules?
Well, the adapter i.e communication channels provided by SAP has their functionality defined. Now suppose you want to have an additional functionality then we can develop that functionality as a module and attach it to the adapter.
For example, file adapter cannot parse the content of an excel file or of a pdf. So if there is a requirement then you can develop a custom module which will have the logic to parse the incoming file and then create an XML (as required). This is just one of the numerous example
