Hi:
I have has an OS crash. I have the files and folders of my DB. (no official backup though).
I have re-installed the MAXDB software to the same version.
What files and folders do I have to copy from the old drive to make this work?
Sequence of steps and/or regsitrations/initializations that I need to do? (if at all)
Thanks in advance.
T.
Hello Tony Mirag,
->Are you SAP customer?
-> What is the OS of the database server?
What is the version of the database?
What was the problem which cost the OS crash?
-> What files and folders of the DB did you backuped at OS level?
-> You need the configuration database files + log and data volumes.
Review the document at www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/wiki?path=/display/maxdb/main
-> SAP MaxDB HowTo -> "HowTo - Creating a clone of a MaxDB instance"
-> section "Creating a clone manually via reusing volumes and parameters"
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina

Natalia:
Thank you for the excellent response. I needed a few days to make a strategic decision based on the document.
We have now decided to move the files to a new machine. I am using the last option of the cloning (file system copy of files and folders). However, I ran into a problem when attempting to start the db. My new machine's drive letters and host name are different. How to I change (and what files do i need to change) for this to work?
Thanks,.
Tony.

Hi Tony,
this depends on what paths differ.
If just the data- and logvolumes reside in a different location now, you can simply use DBMGUI/DB Studio to change the paths to the volumes. This is only possible when the database is offline.
Maybe you also need to change the RUNDIRECTORY and the DIAG_HISTORY_PATH parameters, which can also be done via the GUIs.
Apart from this, you shouldn't need to change anything if the database software itself is correclty installed.
regards,
Lars
Guys:
Apologies for these Q. but if I wanted to run a dual OS Windows 2003, and Windows 2008 and i install this DB on one OS drive, when i boot into the other OS how do I register this DB with that...ireally do not want to duplicate the data files but reuse them. I know I may be aboe to use a comination of the above, but how precisely?
Thanks,
Tony.
Hello Tony,
-> Please review at MAXDB library http://maxdb.sap.com/doc/7_6/default.htm
-> Installation -> Installation Manual -> Details -> Directories
-> Please give more details about the the database directory structures you are
planning to have. What version of the database did you install?
Thank you and best regards, Natalia Khlopina
I have two OSes on the same machine. The share the same drives and I have made it such that the data drives are seen with the same letters. The OS drives will differ.
So
from the perspective of Windows 2008 64bit Server:
OS = I:
DATA: H (so IndepDataPath: H:\sapdb\data and IndepProgPath: H:\sapdb\programs)
from the perspective of Windows 2003 64bit Server:
OS = C:
DATA: H (so IndepDataPath: H:\sapdb\data and IndepProgPath: H:\sapdb\programs)
version of the maxdb is 7.6.03 64 bit.
It is already running perfectly in the first OS mentioned above (Windows 2008 Server).
Thanks.
Tony.
