Solaris 10 as DI for a Win 32 DB

Hi,

is it possibile (read as "SAP-supported") to install a Dialog Istance (JAVA or ABAP+JAVA) on Solaris 10 X64 box for a Win 32 DB istance ?

Oracle 10.2.0.4 of course.

We have a BI 7.0 on MS Cluter as NW04S schema (DB istance really clustered and CI AbapJava on first node and DI AbapJav on second node). We would like to add a DI istance as principal "BI-Portal" and Web-Query.

Regards.

Technically it's possible, see

Note 1067221 - Composite note for heterogeneous installation)

Note 1148109 - Heterogeneous Inst.(Appl. Server Windows, DB Unix)

but keep in mind:

- as soon as Java comes into place the system must use a Unicode kernel which will need more memory than a non-Unicode installation, which may in turn make you reach 32bit system imposed limits (2 GB per workprocess etc.) - so you may not be able to run certain queries

- 32bit platforms are deprecated for production use (see the PAM)

Tuning and keeping a 32bit system up, especially on a BI system, where lots of data is processed can be very cumbersome - or even impossible.

See also Note 1280759 - SAP recommends only 64-Bit Windows for SAP Appl. Servers

If you want to install a Windows DI I HIGHLY suggest using a 64bit Windows (x86_64). Almost all servers produced in the last two years are able to run a 64bit Windows OS.

Hi,

thx for your post.

Yes... it's really difficult, we have a 1,2 TB BI database with several reports & co. I hope to migrate asap to a 64bit arch.... but I prefered a non-Win landscape.

Sure, if I add a new DI on Windows I use Win X64.

I would like to use Solaris 10 X64 because I hope to migrate from Win-to-Sol next year for this BI landscape.

We have an ECC landscape on Solaris 10 SPARC and a PI landscape on Solaris 10 X64 and we are veray happy.

Hello Ganimede,

Did you solve your problem??

We have a similar situation. We want to install two dialog instance in sun solaris x64 and the central instance is running under windows OS (2003 64-bits) with oracle database (10.2.0.4).

Our SAP web application server is 640 (netweaver 04).

We have checked sap notes:

Note 1067221 - Composite note for heterogeneous installation

Note 531069 - Heterogeneous Unix - Unix Systems

Note 680617 - INST: Appl.Server in Heterogeneous SAP System Environment

But the case "central instance in windows and dialog instance in unix" is

not covered.

Any help please??

Thanks in advance and best regards,

David

Hi,

No, it's an open problem for us.

Same situation, CI on Unix and DI on WIndows is documented, but CI on Windows (in my case X86) and DI on Solaris 10 X64 it's not documented on any note or docu.

So, until now, I don't know if is supported by SAP my requested scenario: CI Win32 and DI Solaris X64.

Hi Markus,

>What "help" do you request?

We do not know if is supported/certified by SAP this scenario: CI on Win (in my case 32 bit) and DI on Solaris X64.

This because it's not documented on any note or docu.

Regards.

Bye.
