Hi all,
We're starting to plan our ECC upgrade. This Unicode Non-unicode issue came up, and I want to make sure we're on top of all things that might come up our way.
My background is Basis, however can you please explain what are all issues that should be covered on Unicode. Few things that come up to my head:
1. How do I know if my system is unicode, non-unicode? Is this a Basis configuration, other than the kernel and the database? Or should I check with our programmers and they'll know?
2. If required. We're also doing a SQL05 upgrade, would that have any effect on a unicode database conversion?
3. What is the normal time frame for a unicode conversion? What are the tools/resources required?
Many thanks in advance,
Samer

Everyone,
Please don't mind my first question, just figured how to know if your system is unicode.

Hi Samer,
2.) No it has no direct impact but you may run 2005 on 64bit, then you'll be probably faster building big indexes. May be you see some more improvements, but they will be probably not as remarkable.
3.) Please read note [857081|https://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/857081] and you may be also find thread useful.
Best regards

Hi Samer,
3. a) What is the normal time frame for a unicode conversion ?
Project wise the average time frame is about 3-5 months (depending also on whether you use MDMP and / or you have a very large database).
A single conversion of a productive system usually can be managed for most systems in one weekend. You might have a look at
http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=01100035870000380759&_OBJECT=011000358700003008512003E

for technical downtime examples.
3. b) What are the tools/resources required?
Please also have a look at the link above for Hardware requirements on Unicode.
Regarding tools you mainly need tools included in standard.

Hi,
Take a look at this page in Wiki for project planning:
https://wiki.sdn.sap.com/wiki/display/unicode/ProjectPlanning-SingleCodePageSystem
There are more best practices for unicode conversion in the SDN wiki.
