Hello,

You mention files named TRACE##. Are you sure you find these in the work directory? TRACE## are the files created by the SQL Trace (transaction ST05) as well as the other SAP tracing facilities (controlled via txn ST01). They normally reside in the /usr/sap/SID/DVEBMGS01/log directory, not in "work". If they are in "work" that would mean the parameter rstr/filename has been changed, which is a bit unusual. You can check the setting in txn RZ11.

The number and size of TRACE## files are controlled by two profile parameters:

- rstr/max_files: maximum number of trace files

- rstr/max_filesize_MB: maximum size of each trace file

The default is 10 files of 16 MB, so a total of 160 MB. Check again the settings for your system in RZ11. The parameter rstr/max_filesize_MB can be changed dynamically, the other parameters are static.

The files may be deleted directly at O/S level (but check when they were last modified; maybe there is a recent trace in them someone still wants to look at). They will be recreated the next time a trace is run.

Mark

Hi,

work process trace files are used for error analysis.

If your file system is full. Please reset the trace file for one time.It will save with .old extension. It will give space to you.

Goto SM50

Select Trace

and Reset

Please do not do two times. If you do the second time it will delete the .old extension files.

After few days if it not required then you can delete trace files.

Hai,

Why do you want to delete the Trace files from work directory?

These are needed for error analysis, if the system is not a critical system i.e, if not Production system then you can reset the files from SM50.

If the trace files are growing rapidly then check the degree of tracing in SM50, if the trace is set to 3 then the system writes huge amount of trace data every second.

Check the following link:

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/8c/20213c16fd7c70e10000000a11405a/frameset.htm

Also check the parameters which control the whole process of Tracing in the system.

Normally the trace files are reset or deleted when the work directory gets full and makes the system hang.
