DAYLIGHT SAVINGS - NW 7.0 - ECC / BI / EP / PI - remain up?

Former Member

For the past 10 yrs we only ran ECC aka R/3 (on a different platform) and were able to have SAP remain "up" during the time change to daylight savings in the Spring.

Now - we are running the suite of applications and they are on Windows 2003 w/ MS SQL Server 2005 DB.

Anyone else who has a similar environment ( ECC / BI / PI / EP) and have cleanly remained up / running during the change to daylight savings?

Batch jobs which may straddle the time change (hours) run without issue?

Curious / Feedback

Thank you in advance!

Doreen

Hi,

US DST starts on March 9 and ends on November 2. When the clocks move forward at 2am local time in

March (Central Time zone for WR1), you should stop the SAP &DB at approximately 1:30am and restart it around

3:10am (~40 mins). When the clocks move backward at 2am local time in November, you should stop

the SAP & DB at approximately 1:30 am and restart them around 2:10am (~1 hr, 40min).

This we did last time for our servers just to ensure that no jobs fails as clock goes forward.

I dont think their are any interdepancies between ECC / BI / PI / EP etc.

Below 2 SAP notes may be helpful

Note 118508 - Time settings in the operating system

Note 1019133 - Impact of 2007 USA daylight saving (DST) changes on Oracle

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Sushil

I should clarify -

We are in the US and did apply 919538 when the law / rule changed in 2007

We are very aware of the processes and considerations when changing from DST "daylight savings time" back to "standard time". (when the time goes "backwards")

This question is specific to changing the time "forward"

From - Standard Time

To - Daylight Savings Time

Especially the relationships between the suite of applications - ECC / BI / PI / EP and their interdepancies (eg BI delta / PI communications etc)

Would really like to consider keeping SAP up during the change to Daylight Savings

Hello Doreen,

Please refer to Note 7417.It says

"Conversion from winter time to daylight saving time

When the time is converted from winter time to daylight saving time, the clocks move forward one hour. This is not normally critical for applications. If you require the system to run without downtime, you must ensure that

all processes that are active in the SAP system (application server, database, DB listener and so on) must the same local time zones (see note 398374).

all computers active in the SAP system must be synchronized with each other to the second (Unix/Linux for example: XNTP). You have to set the time synchronisation parameters so that the system time of the server is never set to a time in the past.

Restarting the computer usually solves any problems. For critical applications, the system should be stopped during the conversion"

Also refer to Note 444277 - When does Daylight Saving Time start/end in the USA? which also says that you can afford to keep your system up during this change. This is a very useful note in your case

But we have planned to shutdown all our systems to avoid any issues and I would recommend you to do so

Hope it helps

Hi,

Can you check on which timezone your server is? if it is UTC then no need do anything during DST. But if it

In DST we used to bring down all the SAP Systems & then checks Check the time to ensure that System time has changed. Once time changes we brings up all the system and do necessary checks.

Problems occur at the end of daylight saving time (within a period of an hour, for example from 2.00-3.00) such as runtime errors "ZDATE_LARGE_TIME_DIFF", "ZDATE_ILLEGAL_LOCTIME", "ZDATE_ILLEGAL_DBTIME".This possibly only appears in the system log or as a message in the status line.

Please see below link & SAP notes which may help you.
