Migration from SAP 4.6c with 4.6D EXT kernel on iSeries to Windows platform

Hi,

We are planning to migrate systems that are installed on 64bit iSeries servers with SAP version 4.6C ASCII on 4.6D EXT kernel. We are planning to migrate to Windows environment and am not sure which database to migrate to.

Experts, please let me know the OS version (Windows 2000/2003) and 64 bit/ 32 bit that we need to setup for Migration. Also it can be installed on which version of Oracle or MSSQL Sever database so as to support the migration.

If I am right then this migration can be done using Heterogeneous system copy. Isn't it?

We are in planning phase and this task will be done by our Basis Expert who is a Certified Consultant.

Regards,

Nick Ron

Moved to SAP on Windows forum as migration topics are mostly covered by the target platform.

I have just done a migration from Windows to iSeries. I don't know why you would want to go back the other way. iSeries is much more stable for SAP.

Either way, there were problems I encountered that will be experienced by you as well. The support for such major project is very poor now. SAP has moved on from 4.6C many years ago, so there is no current information available, and the tools are quite primitive compared to the current SAP tools.

If your database is large, then the export/import times could be quite long, as the 'split' function is something you have to do manually. It took me many hours of trial and error to come up with a viable strategy that would run in the required time. The first export/import took three days elapsed time, we finally got that down to about 12 hours.

If you need more detailed information, I can look it up for you.

Hi,

I suggest you to go through https://websmp204.sap-ag.de/pam once.

Hope this helps.

Hi Ron,

I'm sorry to say, but based on these questions, I do not want to judge this basis guy ...

Yes, it can be done with OSDB-Migration tools (which is heterogenious systemcopy) - this needs an OS/DB certified consultant - not only "a normal basis consultant" - this is not a joke.

What can be used ?

All of whatyou wrote !

What would we suggest ?

Not windows 2000 anymore => win 2003

Database: Please take the one where you are experienced .... both work fine for you.

32 or 64 bit ? There is only 1 solution: 64 bit - all the 32 bit is rubbish in SAP environments ...

The question of your kernel is the smallest one and will be solved easy.
