Hi

I am new to Netweaver. So my question may look so simple. But i a need an explanation for the following questions.

1) I heard that R/3 4.7 runs on Basis technology. What is this 'Basis' technology.

2) Inorder to setup a portal, I have seen people installing (WAS + Portal) in one machine and (ECC over a system that has WebAS) in another machine. why is a WAS needed for ECC ?. Is it not enough if the first system has WAS installation with Portal over it.

3) What is WinGUI, SAPGUI and ITS. How are all of them related to each other. I know that ITS is used to host webPages.

Good responses will be surely rewarded !!

Murali.

Hi Murali,

- The "basis" is nothing but the technology platform on

which the ABAP coded applications run. This basis is now

called the Netweaver Application Server. Understanding the

Netweaver platform might help you with understanding the

basis technology.

For more kindly see

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/03/aa934257a5c96ae10000000a155106/frameset.htm

- Its not necessary that you have to have an ECC with a

portal, but it depends on your requirements. I recently

installed a standalone portal and an ECC 6.0 on the same

server. Usually the ECC is the one which contains the

various services such as ESS, MSS, HCM, Fincance etc.

apart from many other industry solutions. Now the various

end-users have access to the portal. This portal requests

the necessary information specific to the user from the

ECC and displays it on the portal. Hence we need the EP to

talk to the ECC system in order to send and recieve

information. You can have a look at the Master Guides for

ECC to understand relation berween Portal and ECC at

http://service.sap.com/instguides.

- SAPGUI is a command normally used to connect to a SAP

system from the desktop. You can find more in help.sap.com

SAPGUI for Windows is known as WinGUI.

The ITS also provides implementation models to develop

internet and intranet applications. The SAPGui is one of

the ITS implementation models. For more

Hope it helps.
