Dear all
what do the total float and free float mean respectively?
i see the total float is negative, eg -50
is it wrong? what does it mean?
thanks a lot
Judy
Critical can be called when Total float equal to or less than zero.
total float = late finish - early finish, late start - early start
Critical path determines the shortest time to complete the projects and it is the longest duration path through a network of tasks.
The cpre of Critical paeth Anlysis is to know how to calculate the ES, LS, EF, EF for an activity in a network diagram using the Forward pass and Backward pass.
Hopw u got it,

Hi Judy,
It is absolutely normal, that the float get negative. It just represents the fact, that typically the inputed finish date can not be gained. The consulting note 151551 should give you some background about network scheduling.
Kind regards,
Zhenbo

Its Critical path... it will come under critical path method where the total float =< 0
I will later explain you the total float formula.

Hello
The definitions of free float and total float are provided in SAP itself. In your case the issue is this particular activity starts 50 days before ts predecessor starts which inturn creates a scheduling conflict. Change the start date of the activity to before its predecessors start date. This scenario is for a basic FS relationship
Depending upon the relationship assigned the reason might vary. Please provide the relationships of that particular activity for the accurate solution.

Dear,
Total float is the time that an activity can be shifted out into the future starting from its earliest dates without affecting the latest dates of its successor or the latest finish date of the network.
Free float is the time that an activity can be shifted out into the future starting from its earliest dates without affecting the earliest dates of its successor or the earliest finish date of the network.
The free float must not be less than zero or greater than the total float.

Hi
The scheduling is done with Forward as well as backward process. The difference between the two scheduling process gives the float for the activity. Hence the float comes out in the negative if there is a difference between forward scheduling and backward scheduling
