Is it possible to configure a billing plan based on a customer- type of customer and the payment terms for that customer should trigger a billing plan in the sales order.

I do not think it is possible.

Billing Plan is of two types, Periodic Billing Plan & Milestone Billing Plan.

Billing plan type is defaulted from the item category or it is specified in the item category.

In Item category TAO, you will find "Milestone Billing plan type".

In item category WVN, you will find "Periodic Billing Plan type ".

Especially, in Rental and Maintenance contract Periodic billing plan is used.

In this Billing plan, period is fixed, amount to be billed is fixed and it is total amount.

In large project like engineering and construction, Milestone billing plan is used. Here period of billing is not fixed, it is a prtial amount billed and there is final settlement.

That is what I thought but just needed to double check since that was the clients requirement- thank you for the quick response
