Can any body expalin the steps for SAP upgradation

There are a lot of steps involved in an upgrade project i'll try to make a summary for a typical R3 Upgrade

1.- Pre Upgrade Activities

Backups

Users Passwords

Prepare the neccesary software for the upgrade

2.- Prepare Activities

Parameter input

Initialization

Import *** AVOID ANY TRANSPORT IMPORT (STMS & TP) ****

General Checks

Activation Checks

Necessary checks for convertions

3. Upgrade Online

Start SAPup

Import and modification transfer

Shadow System Installation

Complete all CTS projects

Close all projects

Dictionary Modification Adjustment (SPDD) Start activation

4. Perform R/3 Upgrade

Phase 1 : Swith tables and Kernel

Stops SAP system and changes profiles

Starts SAP system

Deletes triggers

Deletes inconsistent values from tables

Checks whether outstanding updates tasks and queued RFCs exist

Stops SAP system

Activates nametab entries for external conversions

Switches to new Repository

Creates SAP Web Application Server views

Adapts switched nametab entries for database objects to the target system

Switches SAP kernel

Imports (a small number of) table entries needed to start the system with the new SAP kernel

5. Phase 2 : Convertion, Main Import, XPRAs

Starts SAP system

Generates statistics for tables in transport management

Copies entries from shadow tables to original tables

Imports requests for porting-specific modifications

Check, if index pre-creation was succesful

Converts application tables and activates their nametab entries

Stops SAP system

Converts application views and activates remaining nametab entries

Starts SAP system

Cleans up table DBDIFF in the database

Stop SAP system to speed up import

Imports entries into control tables

Interaction

Updates statistics for certain tables

Starts SAP system

Import of additional transport requests

Checks if current structure extensions collide with the DDIC enhancement category of the target release

Interaction

Sets required syncmarks

Executes AIMs in advance in order to avoid errors in XPRA phase

If errors occur, repeats phase automatically"

Sets the status of the installed languages

Updates status information for imported Support Packages

6. Phase 3: Post Processing

Change the start profile, if the next start fails check the profiles.
