Iseries, ADS and PDF image quality

Has anyone run into a problem where images in a PDF document print in monochrome only instead of greyscale? We're pulling in color images and using a standard HPLJ4 device type w/ print method C (OS call). Is the iseries remote outq causing the problem? Should I have the outq setup in a certain way to get a correct greyscale conversion?

Here is what I've tried/done so far:

Read note 685571

Tried a greyscale image instead of color

Copied the HPLJ4 to ZHPLJ4 and set the XDC to hppcl5c instead of hppcl5e (produced garbage greyscale)

Tweaked both XDC files (admittedly not really knowing what I'm doing)

Copied back original XDC files when I gave up on tweaking

Tried PDF1 and POST2 device types

Set the Image configuration (IMGCFG) in the outq to different *IMGA##

Any more ideas to try are welcome

Mark

I've found a partial solution but need help expanding it if possible. My initial test for printing are going to an HPLJ4000T but this process will need to be in production on a Ricoh 5500. With the help of notes 410727 and 798375, I was able to get the 4000T printing properly in grayscale. This success was accomplished by using the POST2 device type and checking the color printer box.

After more research, I found that I could set a copied HPLJ4 (ZHPLJ4) device type to use the ps_plain.xdc for PCL in RSPO0022 and get the same results. This device type will not work on the Ricoh model since it doesn't support Postscript (at least out of the box).

With this information can anyone help me pick a device type/xdc file combination that will work on the non-Postscript enabled Ricoh?

Hi Mark,

printing is always a nice topic ))

Do you need this lic pgm ? No, not at all - at least not, with the HPLJ4 SAP driver !

This driver (as nearly all SAP drivers) is the final layout that goes binary to the printer.

=> If you might have performance or stsability issues, you could check in your remote outq - as you seem to have issues with the garyscale (contents of the printout), the only help can come from an enhanced or different printer driver !

I would suggest, to check the following ones:

- HPLJ4000

- HPLJ8000

- HPLJ4

- HPLJ_II

- HPLJ5

Do I need Host Print transform set to *YES in remote outq?

Will I need a value in the Image Configuration field if I set TRANSFORM to *YES?

I tried all those device types in SAP and still the image on the PDF is printing out in monochrome and not grayscale.

Hi Mark,

transform has no effect here, as the files in ASCII already - therefore, this cannot help, as the i5 only transmits the stuff.

What printer type & model are you using ?

Right now I'm testing with an HP4000 but I've tried printing on several different Ricoh models (which use modified HPLJ4 drivers) and the results are all the same - monochrome

Anything special I need to change in the XDC files on the ADS server?
