Workflows in MDM

Hi,

am SAP Workflow Consultant by profession.

Never worked on SAP MDM, but I heard there are WF's in MDM too.

Question is are the SAP MDM workflows different from SAP Workflows?

I mean are WF's in MDM built using same WF Builder that SAP Workflows use?

Hi Aditya,

MDM Workflows are light weight in the sense they are not that powerful as SAP Workflows are.

MDM workflows can be triggered when new records are created, modified or imported in MDM and there is one more option of Manual triggering. With the help of MDM workflows we can validate the records, send the email notification, assign some values to the fields etc.

MDM workflows are designed in Microsoft Visio and has 13 steps in all including Start and Stop.

Hi Aditya,

Yes, you are right, that SAP MDM workflows are SAP Business Workflows are very different in the how to part of it.

While in Business workflows, you have the workflow builder (SWDD) to create the workflow and do the developments. In SAP MDM Workflow, firstly you need to install MS Visio in your system, then you have to do design the workflow in the Workflow mode in Data manager (which is one of the 4 GUIu2019s in MDM), using the provided stensils.

While SAP business workflow is built on business objects; SAP MDM workflow is more configuration driven, it does not have all the funtionalities of business objects and does not involve coding.

Having worked on both the workflows, my view is SAP Business workflows has much more functionalities and is more flexible.

No............. MDM use Microsoft Visio to build workflows.

U can achieve all of ur requirements using MDM workflows like u can send mail, do validations, assignments, Grouping, Branch.
