What is the PROPER WAY of shutting down R/3 4.7 on Windows 2003

Hi All

I am very new to handling 4.7 and have to perform some maintenance on SAP 4.7 (Oracle DB) on Windows 2003 server. I am not confident on the proper way of shutting down of the SAP instance. I did some R&D on test servers, but i seem to crash SAPOSCOL service each time..

Please Help..

Thanks Ashok

Well thats the base procedure of shutting down SAP R/3..

Check is core updates or batch processes are not running on the R/3 system, update users, kill all sessions.

Then using Sap MMC shutdown all the instances

Flush Oracle, then shudown the SID

But all these procedures do not automatically shudown SAP services, the above step only kills the Disp+Work threads and not the SAP core services like SAPOSCOL..

I have learnt that although SAPOSCOL is not that critical a service for the smooth operation of R/3, but it throws proper errors in the error logs if not shudown properly. The only way i see is to right-click the service and select >> All Tasks > Stop. But this seems to stop SAPOSCOL somewhere in between working something that crashes it instantly. I have not stumbled upon any other explaination for this behaviour..

Hi Kamal,

Once you stop application via mmc you can stop the saposcol using the below command.

saposcol -k: Stop OS Collector

Hi Kamal,

Below will be the procedure under window 2003 and oracle.

Check that there is no update running in the system using t-code sm13

Check that there is no background job at active status or currently running. t-code sm37

Send message to users in t-code SM02 about the shutdown.

Then Stop SAP using sapmmc

Then Stop oracle manually at oracle level.

Services will be stoped automatically. If you have issues with SAPOSCOL then stop this servise before shuting down windows 2003.

Hope this helps.

Regards

Ashok
