For example for supply chain management.

Whenever a new sales order is created in SAP, the system checks via XI the credibility of the partner at Dun & Bradstreet.

This is all setup with standard XI content.

For example you want to exchange data between SAP and Database

SAP and Non SAP

In general if you need to communicate between two hetergoneous systems it can be done through middleware (Which is EAI ) and PI is SAP product.
