PDA with RFID

Former Member

Hi,

we have a requirment where we are implementing Mobile Infrastructure(offline) using the PDA

(i mate 6150).

The customer initially needs to login into the PDA and upon sucessful authentication he can store the the data in the PDA and sync the data to the MI Server by End of the Day.

For this requirment the following are the questions:

1) Does the mobile need to be enabled with RFID technology

2) Does the mobile needs to be enabled with GSM / WiFi, where exactly we differenciate between these two

.

Thanks,

vijay

Hi,

It depends on the infrastructure they already have and also on the scenarios they want to implement.

If they want to implement mobile offline or mostly disconnected scenarios like xMAM, xMTT, xMDSD, xMSA HH then you should advice them to either go for Windows Mobile PDAs (edit->) with phones / Windows Mobile PDAs without phones.

Generally for all Mobile Scenarios - Custom/ Standard - We can classify as below:

For non rugged / non barcode/non rfid requirements we can suggest the HTC PDA Models such as:

HTC Kaiser -TyTn II/ AT&T Tilt

HTC Athena - Advantage 7510

HTC Blackstone - Touch HD

For Rugged usage / barcode /RFID scenarios we can suggest Windows Mobile devices from Symbol (Motorola) / Intermec / Psiontek

Dear Sunaina,

Hi Vijay,

For the purticular requirement you need not go for RFID and the second scenario is appicable i.e Wi-Fi....ect.any other wireless technology will do.

Thanks,

Hi,

Radio Frequency IDentification (RFID) is a method of remotely storing and retrieving data using devices called RFID tags or transponder. An RFID tag is a small object, such as an adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated into a product. RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID transceiver.

RFID systems can be used just about anywhere, from clothing tags to missiles to pet tags to food - anywhere that a unique identification system is needed. The tag can carry information as simple as a pet owners name and address or the cleaning instruction on a sweater to as complex as instructions on how to assemble a car.

There are two types of RFID tags. Active OR Passive.

Activer tags must have a power source and may have longer ranges and larger memories than passive tags whereas passive tags do not have there own power supply.

An RFID system consists of several components like tags, tag readers, tag programming stations, circulation readers, sorting equipment, and tag inventory wands. Security can be handled in two ways. Security gates can query the ILS (Integrated Logic System) to determine its security status or the tag may contain a security bit which would be turned on and off by circulation or self-check reader stations

Go through the link.

Hi,

3 scenarios that use RFID. The scenarios are as follows:

Work order on the mobile device is locked and cannot be accessed until the user reads the RFID tag of the technical object.

After the completion of an order, service related information is written onto the RFID tag.

The creation of a new order / notification is supported by using the master data stored on the RFID tag.

In order to successfully employ the MAM RFID Management functionality, 3rd party vendor RFID driver software is required to be installed to the hardware RFID-reader device.

Please see OSS note 734102 - RFID 3rd Party Software Installation/Deployment for more detailed information.

Also more related OSS notes to RFID are:

809355 - MAM RFID Tag Structure Enhancement Guide

Dear Vijay,

As an additional answer to your queries:

2. GSM/ WiFi /Bluetooth are the radios which give different kind/level of Wireless Connectivity to your device.

GSM/WiFi included PDA models (like the ones you find in the thread Sahidur referred) double up as a general phone too.

If your customer does not want phone functionality in the PDA, you can advice them to go for non-phone PDAs (which have touchscreen running Windows Mobile Classic) are available from vendors like Hewlett Packard (HP)

Mark the thread as answered if my or thers' post solved your question.

Hi Vijay,

For the requirement you have mentioned the best option will be Windows based PDA.And for this particular requirement the PDA need not be enabled with RFID because you are not dealing with any RFID activity.

for more information about different mobile devices refer the following thread:
